With April in full swing, Women’s History Month is officially behind us, and it’s time to announce the winner of our #EnviroSHEroes social media contest.

We received so many great submissions. A few of the nominees that stood out were “Lady Bird” Johnson, who worked to make our highways green as First Lady of the United States; Annie Leonard, Greenpeace executive director and creator of the Story of Stuff project; and Mausi Kühl, founder of the Selva Negra Community Foundation and a leader in the sustainable agriculture movement.

Regrettably, we can only choose one winner. So without further ado, the winner of the 2016 inspirational women social media contest is (drum roll please)...

@Teuta_Zejno’s submission for Christiana Figueres! The Costa Rican diplomat has served as the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change since 2015. She played an instrumental role in the historic 2015 Paris Agreement.

Runner-ups included @Randime77’s submission for former Xena Warrior Princess and real-life eco-heroine, Lucy Lawless, and @ChrisDudley85’s nomination of Long Island environmental leader, Lorna Salzman, who has worked to protect safe drinking water and endangered habitats for forty years.

Women's History Month may be over, but these eco-heroines' contributions will endure.
