SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES DONNA EDWARDS

Conservation Group Praises Work to Protect Maryland’s Environment

College Park, MD: The Maryland Chapter of the Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Donna Edwards in the 2008 Congressional election.

"We are very pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Donna Edwards for the Democratic nomination for Maryland’s 4th Congressional District," said Betsy Johnson, Political Chair for the Maryland Chapter. "We are confident that she will continue work to protect Maryland’s environment, for our families and for our future." Sierra Club also endorsed Edwards in her first run for Congress in 2006.

In October, Donna Edwards was honored for her years of commitment and service to the environment with the 2007 Conservationist of the Year Award from Sierra Club’s Maryland Chapter. "Donna Edwards is a true environmental leader," said Mike Martin, Chair of the Maryland Chapter of Sierra Club. "She has consistently provided the vision and the hard work needed on behalf of environmental issues locally and nationally for many, many years." Edwards has worked with the Maryland Chapter for many years on transportation and land use issues in southern Prince Georges County.

"It's an honor and a privilege to receive this award from the Maryland Chapter of Sierra Club," said Ms. Edwards. "I have worked with many of these dedicated individuals on various environmental issues and I am proud to receive this recognition from my peers. I look forward to many more years of working together on the local and national level to promote environmental conservation and to address global warming."

In addition to the Sierra Club's Conservationist of the Year award, Edwards received this month, together with Bonnie Bick of the Sierra Club, a Capital Region Visionary Award from the Coalition for Smarter Growth, for their work in Oxon Hill. Donna Edwards and Bonnie Bick are exemplars of effective civic activism in planning the future of their community, and received the award for their leadership of the Campaign to Reinvest in the Heart of Oxon Hill.

Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Edward's campaign.

"We pledge to do all we can to help ensure that Donna Edwards is elected," concluded Johnson. "Scores of Sierra Club volunteers will contact voters on her behalf and we will speak to the public as often as possible about her exemplary environmental record. We look forward to a victory party for the environment on election night and to many more years of Edwards fighting for the environment as a U.S. Representative."
