About Us

Youth Action for the Global Environment Campaign
We work to develop a movement of students and young people to advance global reproductive health and sustainable development solutions. By mobilizing youth leaders who recognize the inter-connectedness of population growth, natural resource consumption, reproductive health and rights, and sustainable, healthy communities, we not only raise the voices of a new generation of leaders, but also empower them to shape the future of issues that affect them and the rest of the world.

Why the U.S. Should Rise Up and Meet our Global Challenges
As the richest and most powerful country in the world, the U.S. has an opportunity to address global challenges like climate change, water scarcity, deforestation, poverty and access to health care. The international community has long waited for the U.S. government to keep its promise to support voluntary family planning. Meanwhile, the U.S. public desperately needs honest dialogue about sustainable family planning solutions-including strategies to reduce teen pregnancy. The time to advance public discourse about real population solutions is now!

Why are Young People so Important in Defining our Shared Future?
We recognize that youth voices are key to changing U.S. policies that affect young people around the world. As future leaders, youth deserve access to information that will enable them to make empowered decisions about their lives, and speak out for sustainable family planning and development solutions here and abroad. Young people must have a voice and a seat at the decision-making table when it comes to ensuring the health of their own bodies, and the planet!

What does this have to do with the Sierra Club?
The Sierra Club's mission to explore, enjoy and protect the planet cannot be met without addressing the environmental pressure population growth poses. We add almost 80 million people a year to the planet. We are on track to add as many people in the next 50 years as we did in the last 40. Meanwhile, more than one billion adolescents across the planet (the largest number ever) are simultaneously entering their reproductive years at a time when contraceptive supplies are uncertain and inconsistent, and U.S. support for family planning programs is wavering. The reproductive choices available to young people, in addition to the educational and economic opportunities, will impact our world for years to come

How You Can Get Involved!
Contact our Campus Organizer at population@sierraclub.org! We will provide you with everything you need to take action, including tabling materials, posters, DVDs and fact-sheets. With advance notice, we will come to your campus and deliver an interactive "Reproductive Health and the Environment" presentation, led by international and U.S. youth leaders. Or contact us if you're interested in attending our bi-annual Statewide Youth Summit or our annual National Training in Washington D.C., the One Voice Summit, where we collaborate with coalition partners to train youth leaders with the information and skills necessary to advance global reproductive health and sustainable development solutions. This campaign is about YOU-so take action today!
