Migration happens when freedom, disaster, economic opportunity, environmental
degradation, and desperation are distributed so unevenly across the globe
that people are forced to make difficult choices: stay and barely survive,
or move and
possibly thrive. Sierra Club founder John Muir, an immigrant himself, once
noted that "when we try to pick out anything by itself,
we find it hitched to everything else in the universe." Today, the
Club’s International Program mirrors that sentiment with multifaceted
programs encompassing not only population issues but also human rights,
fair trade, and environmentally sustainable development.
