Endorsed by the Sierra Club, Tom Udall has served five terms in the United States House of Representatives, representing New Mexico's 3rd Congressional District. Udall has consistently championed environmental causes. In Congress, he has a strong environmental record, earning a 100 percent LCV score in the last session of Congress and above a 90 percent in each of the preceding terms, giving him a 96% lifetime LCV rating.
When the Bush administration recently proposed cuts in endangered species restoration funding, Udall successfully introduced an amendment that provided an additional $10 million in funding. He's also supported better vehicle fuel efficiency standards, increased renewable fuel production, and better building energy efficiency. Udall supports a national Renewable Electricity Standard, repealing oil company subsidies, funding water pollution control, and a carbon cap and trade program.
He has voted to oppose liquid coal and offshore drilling. He's also supported measures creating wilderness areas around the U.S. Notably, Udall co-authored and helped pass the Udall-Platts Amendment (H.R. 969) to the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978. This amendment will establish federal renewable energy standards.
