A brief history of Hutchinson Lodge

Hutchinson Lodge is 2.3 miles east of Interstate 80 (exit 174) on Donner Pass Road. Clair Tappaan Lodge is immediately east. When there is no snow, Hutchinson is accessible by 4-wheel drive vehicle; otherwise one must walk uphill 100 yards from the parking lot.

Guests bring clothing, toiletries, bedding, sports gear, and food. The lodge has a fully equipped kitchen, 2 sleeping lofts with mats, and 2 showers and toilets. Two efficient wood burning stoves provide heat. Wood is stored in a connected structure. Guests perform all chores and cleanup; there are no staff services.

The lodge is available year round. It is a rustic building that is inviting and well lighted. It is enjoyed by activity groups and training groups. It is used for retreats and family reunions. The capacity is 20 people, but that number can be increased if folks are willing to sleep outside. The lodge is usually fully booked winter weekends, although winter weekdays are often available.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing starts right out the door. Several downhill skiing areas are in the immediate area with weekend shuttle service. Spring, summer, and fall activities include hiking, swimming in mountain lakes, biking on road and off road, and rock climbing. The Pacific Crest Trail is nearby and Lake Tahoe is just 25 miles away.

Rates:

The rate is $30 per night per person with a minimum of $300 plus tax. A $300 deposit is required to cover any damage and cleanup not done by the departing party. There is an additional charge to use the electrically heated sauna. Snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals are available at Clair Tappaan Lodge.

Reservations:

Reservation requests for the winter season and the following year are accepted only in writing prior to November 1st, whereupon all requests on file are processed in lottery fashion, with Sierra Club groups and work party participants given priority. All requests must include a $300 damage security check. Additionally, a check for 50% of the full amount of the reservation or a valid VISA or MasterCard number, including the expiration date is needed.

After November 1st, requests for reservations are accepted by phone by Clair Tappaan staff and are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Hutchinson Lodge, P.O. Box 36, Norden, CA 95724. Phone 530.426.3632 or 1.800.679.6775.
