🌞 Powering the Future: How OREEP Is Bringing Renewable Energy Into Oklahoma Classrooms

Oklahoma is a state deeply rooted in oil and gas production. For years, industry-supported programs have provided educators with classroom materials focused exclusively on fossil fuels—leaving little room for students to learn about cleaner, renewable alternatives. But thanks to a visionary team of retired science teachers and Sierra Club members, that’s changing.

🌿 A Homegrown Solution: The Birth of OREEP

Recognizing a major gap in energy education, Jane Cronin, Tara Barker, and Dr. Doug Weirick teamed up to create the Oklahoma Renewable Energy Education Program (OREEP). With backing from the Oklahoma Chapter of the Sierra Club, they developed a dynamic STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) curriculum that brings renewable energy topics to life in Oklahoma classrooms.

Launched in 2018, OREEP equips teachers with free workshops, hands-on learning tools, and standards-aligned lesson plans that introduce students to the science and potential of solar, wind, and other renewable technologies.

🎓 Free Workshops, Real-World Learning

Each OREEP workshop offers:

  • Engaging, standards-aligned lessons in renewable energy science and engineering
  • Classroom-ready teaching materials available for checkout after training
  • Guidance for student-led investigations and science fair projects
  • STEAM activities that promote problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity

Teachers walk away with the confidence, tools, and support they need to spark curiosity about clean energy in the classroom—without having to purchase any materials themselves.

🌐 Resources at Your Fingertips

The program’s website, OREEP.org, is a growing hub of educator resources. Visitors can download:

  • A full activity guide and student notebook
  • Printable activity books and coloring pages
  • Lesson plans aligned to Oklahoma academic standards

OREEP also offers equipment loans and volunteer consulting to help teachers maximize hands-on learning opportunities.

🚀 Impact That’s Already Taking Off

Since its first workshop in April 2018, OREEP has trained 292 educators—which translates to an estimated 20,000 students reached across the state. That’s 20,000 future leaders gaining the skills and awareness to take on tomorrow’s energy challenges.

With continued support from partners like the Kirkpatrick Foundation, the Oklahoma Sierra Club, and community volunteers, OREEP is growing fast—and helping build a cleaner, brighter energy future for all Oklahomans.
