Save the Sawmill Wetlands!

A Franklin county judge has ordered the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to give away a rare, state-owned wetland park, Sawmill Wetland Education Area, to a private developer. Sawmill Wetlands was donated to the state of Ohio with a requirement that it be preserved permanently as a natural area for the use and benefit of the people of Ohio. The private developer set to take ownership of the Sawmill Wetlands has said publicly the company plans to destroy the wetlands to create a commercial building.

Unless this ruling is overturned, this rare public park and the wildlife it supports will be destroyed. This ruling not only threatens the survival of Sawmill Wetlands, but sets a dangerous precedent for parks and natural areas across Ohio.

Sawmill Wetlands can still be saved. The state can appeal this ruling and ensure this rare wetland park remains in the hands of the people of Ohio. Governor Kasich should stand up for Ohio’s parks and the people of Ohio.

Raise Your Voice Today: Urge Governor Kasich to uphold the state’s promise and obligation to preserve the Sawmill Wetlands for the people of Ohio.

The vast majority of wetlands within the City of Columbus have been destroyed, and Sawmill Wetlands is one of only a few high quality wetlands remaining. The wetlands provide critical wildlife habitat in an area that is otherwise filled with urban development. This treasured local park also provides recreational and educational opportunities for residents and local youth.

The state has only until the end of September to appeal the ruling. To save Sawmill Wetlands, Governor Kasich needs to hear strong public support for appealing this ruling.

Please take action today and Tell Governor Kasich to appeal this ruling and stop the destruction of the Sawmill Wetlands.
