Yet recent studies confirm that traditional “armored” shorelines such as levees and concrete bulkheads offer less long-term protection than people might think. Now, more scientists, policy makers, and funding agencies have come to understand that “living shorelines” are a vital and necessary piece to the shoreline protection puzzle.
