Smart Energy Summer

As we look toward a future increasingly threatened by the realities of global warming, one thing becomes clear: Business-as-usual is not an option. Science tells us that our addiction to fossil fuels has put us on a path to oblivion. This summer, let's get started on a new path. We may not have all the answers, but we have enough to begin. And begin we must. Like any challenge, climate change also brings opportunity -- new jobs, a more vibrant economy, cleaner and safer technologies. The task now is to apply our ingenuity and political will to energy solutions for a brighter, more promising future.

Focus on: I Want My MPG

Did you feel faint the last time you filled up your gas tank? Consider taking out a loan?

If you're like many Americans, when you bought your car, you probably didn't give much thought to its fuel economy. Unfortunately, neither have most automakers.

But not only would making our cars, SUVs, and trucks go farther on a gallon of gas save consumers money, it would also reduce global warming pollution and reduce dependence on oil. How much of a difference would it make?

Over 6,500 individuals used the Sierra Club's "I Want My MPG Calculator" this summer to discover that they would have saved 4.9 million dollars and reduced their global warming emissions by over 500 million pounds. If all of our cars, trucks, and SUVs taken together averaged 40 miles per gallon, we'd save 4 million barrels of oil a day -- about ten times the amount we get each day from Prudhoe Bay -- and the average driver would save about $600 a year at today's gas prices.
