Ramón Cruz, el primer presidente hispano del Sierra Club, emitió un videomensaje de aceptación y gratitud, cuyo texto es el siguiente:
Saludos. Soy Ramón Cruz. Es un honor haber sido elegido presidente de la Junta Directiva del Sierra Club.
Como primer presidente latino del Sierra Club, estoy ansioso por colaborar con los otros miembros de la junta, líderes y voluntarios de la organización entera mientras trabajamos para crear un futuro más equitativo y sustentable.
Reconozco que mi mandato surge durante la enormemente difícil pandemia de COVID-19, al igual que durante la sombría amenaza al medio ambiente y a las comunidades del país de la administración Trump. Al mismo tiempo, los asesinatos de George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery e infinidad de otros afroamericanos, al igual que el desproporcionado impacto de COVID-19 en las comunidades negras, han dejado claro una vez más el profundo y sistémico racismo en nuestro país.
Como muchos de ustedes, me siento abrumado y entristecido por los tiempos en los que vivimos. Pero también me anima la comunidad que continuamos edificando mientras colectivamente tratamos de superar la crisis de salud pública, la crisis del racismo sistémico y la crisis de las injusticias ambientales.
Haber pasado parte de las secuelas del Huracán María en mi Puerto Rico natal me enseñó mucho sobre la resiliencia. Mientras Donald Trump y su incompetente administración siguen fallándonos, el Sierra Club continúa luchando por una recuperación justa que funcione para los trabajadores del país y garantice justicia racial y ambiental para todos.
Cuando se trata de la urgente recuperación económica, parte de nuestra lucha incluye asegurarnos de que las corporaciones contaminantes no reciban fondos públicos de rescate y que el sector de energía limpia y sus millones de trabajadores expuestos a la pandemia reciban apoyo y protección.
Los retos que enfrentamos son imponentes, y nuestras respuestas tienen que encarar la magnitud de este momento.
Tenemos la responsabilidad de apoyar políticas que se centren en los más vulnerables entre nosotros.
Tenemos la responsabilidad de abordar las muchas consecuencias de estas crisis en las comunidades marginalizadas mientras creamos un mundo que funcione para todos.
Como presidente, me comprometo a redoblar nuestros esfuerzos para derrotar la agenda anti ambiental de la administración Trump, y asegurarnos de que nuestro movimiento para explorar, disfrutar y proteger el planeta esté arraigado en la diversidad, equidad y justicia.
No podemos permitirnos retroceder en el progreso que hemos logrado. Gracias por ofrecerme la oportunidad de servir a esta organización.

Ramón Cruz, the Sierra Club's first Latino president, released a video message of aceptance and gratitude. Here's the text:
Hi, I’m Ramón Cruz, and I am honored to have been elected the new president of the Sierra Club board of directors.
As the first Latino president of the Sierra Club, I am excited to partner with the other board members, leaders, and volunteers across this organization as we work to create a more equitable, just and sustainable future.
I recognize that my term comes during the enormously difficult COVID-19 pandemic, as well as during the dark threat to the environment and communities nationwide posed by the Trump administration. At the same time, the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black Americans, as well as the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on the Black communities, have laid bare once again the deep and systemic racism in our country. Like so many of you, I am sobered and saddened by the times we find ourselves in. But I am also encouraged by the community that we continue to build as we collectively seek to overcome this public health crisis, the crisis of systemic racism, and the crisis of environmental injustice.
Spending part of the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in my native Puerto Rico taught me a lot about resilience.
Though Donald Trump and his incompetent administration continue to fail us, the Sierra Club continues to fight for a just recovery that works for working people, as well as racial and environmental justice for all.
When it comes to our urgently needed economic recovery, part of our fight includes ensuring that corporate polluters are not bailed out with public funding, and that the clean energy sector and its millions of at-risk workers are supported and protected.
The challenges we face are daunting, and our responses must meet the magnitude of this moment.
We have a responsibility to advocate for policies that center the most vulnerable among us.
We have a responsibility to address the disparate consequences of today’s crises on marginalized communities as we work to create a world that works for all of us.
As president, I pledge to urgently double down on our work to defeat the Trump Administration’s anti-environment agenda, and ensure that our grassroots movement to explore, enjoy and protect the planet is rooted in diversity, equity, and justice.
We cannot afford to move backwards from the progress we’ve made.
