Bonn, Alemania — Siria anunció que se unirá al Acuerdo Climático de París dejando a Estados Unidos como el único país del planeta que ha indicado que no participará en el pacto. Bajo la administración Obama, Estados Unidos ayudó a liderar las negociaciones que redactaron el acuerdo. Ahora la administración Trump trata de retirar a nuestro país del acuerdo usando declaraciones incorrectas sin base racional alguna.
El Acuerdo de París entró en vigor el 4 de noviembre de 2016, y según los términos, ningún país puede solicitar formalmente su intención de retiro hasta tres años tras dicha ratificación. Para entonces se tardará un año para completar la retirada, lo cual significa que la fecha más cercana que esto podría ocurrir sería el días después de las elecciones presidenciales de 2020.
Como respuesta, el director ejecutivo del Sierra Club, Michael Brune, emitió el siguiente comunicado:
“Como si ya no fuera patentemente claro, todos los países del mundo están comprometidos a combatir la crisis climática, mientras que Donald Trump ha aislado a Estados Unidos en el escenario mundial con una postura vergonzosa y peligrosa. Los desesperados esfuerzos de Trump por ayudar a los contaminadores corporativos ignorando las realidades de la crisis climática demuestran que ni le importa ni conoce lo que son las dotes de liderazgo. Por fortuna, los líderes de ciudades y estados de todo nuestro país están actuando y comprometiéndose a completar la transición a la energía limpia demostrando así que no es Estados Unidos el que carece de dotes de liderazgo, solo la Casa Blanca”.

Syria Announces It Will Join The Paris Agreement
Trump Completely Isolates The U.S. On The World Stage
BONN, GERMANY -- Today, Syria announced that it will join the Paris Agreement, leaving the United States as the only country in the world who has indicated that they will not to participate in the Accord. Under the Obama administration, the U.S. had helped lead negotiations, crafting the global agreement. The Trump administration is attempting to withdraw America from the agreement using incorrect statements and baseless claims about it as rational.
The Paris Agreement entered into force on Nov. 4, 2016, and according to the terms, no country can formally submit their intent to withdraw until three years after the date of entry into force. It will then take one year to fully withdraw, meaning the earliest the U.S. could officially withdraw is the day after the 2020 election.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“As if it wasn’t already crystal clear, every single other country in the world is moving forward together to tackle the climate crisis, while Donald Trump has isolated the United States on the world stage in an embarrassing and dangerous position. Trump’s desperate moves to help corporate polluters by refusing to acknowledge the reality of the climate crisis shows that he neither cares about leadership nor does he understand it. Thankfully, leaders in cities and states around the U.S. are taking action and committing to transitioning to 100 percent clean energy, proving that it’s not America that’s devoid of leadership, only the White House.”
