Las Vegas bajo una nube tóxica de contaminación

He trabajado como organizadora ambiental en la comunidad hispana durante años, y nunca he estado más preocupada por el peligro de los contaminadores corporativos. En todo el país, tres millones de hispanos padecen de asma, y casi la mitad de ellos reportan que alguien de su familia tiene asma. En Clark County, casi 30 mil niños sufren de ataques de asma, y muchos de ellos debido la contaminación de vehículos, plantas energéticas de carbón y gas. El problema es grave, y ahora tenemos un administrador de la Agencia Federal de Protección Ambiental (EPA), Scott Pruitt, que está acabando con las protecciones de calidad del aire y la salud de todos.
Pruitt y sus corruptas relaciones con las personas que se supone que tienen que regular no se caen de los titulares noticiosos, por lo cual debería el presidente Donald Trump despedirlo. De hecho, Pruitt debería haber sido despedido hace mucho por no proteger el medio ambiente y la salud pública afectados por corporaciones que ensucian el aire y el agua de todos.
Aquí en Nevada, no siempre reconocemos lo importante y valiosa que es la EPA para nuestra salud. Cada año, la EPA gasta decenas de millones de dólares protegiendo la limpieza del agua, reduciendo los índices de contaminación, y reparando los daños ambientales en nuestras comunidades. Pruitt y Trump quieren cortar el presupuesto de la EPA, y ya han anunciado la clausura del Laboratorio Nacional de Investigación a la Exposición a la Contaminación, aquí en Las Vegas.
Los programas de la EPA que Pruitt está tratando de eliminar son populares en todo el país, particularmente entre los hispanos. Está tratando de acabar con el Plan de Energía Limpia, el cual hubiera acelerado la transición hacia fuentes limpias y renovables. Más del 80% de los votantes hispanos apoya invertir en fuentes de energía limpia, y quizá sea en parte porque el porcentaje de hispanos que trabaja en las industrias solar y eólica es mayor que el de la fuerza laboral total. Y aquí en Nevada, más de 100 compañías solares emplean a casi 9 mil personas.
Pruitt también niega lo rlacionado con el cambio climático, así que a nadie extrañó que urgiera a Trump a retirarse del Acuerdo Climático de París, pese a que el 93% de los hispanos apoya quedarse en el Pacto.
Recientemente, Pruitt urgió a la EPA a que eliminará los estándares de eficacia de los carros nuevos. Desde que esos límites fueron implementados en 2012, los nevadenses se han ahorrado $290 millones en la gasolina, y esa es la razón por la que siete de cada diez votantes de todo el país apoyan mantener esos estándares.
Ahora, la corrupción de Pruitt se hace más obvia al descubrirse su despilfarro -de cientos de miles de dólares de los contribuyentes- viajando en primera clase. Los tratos que hizo con cabilderos y ejecutivos de las industrias petrolera, carbonera y gasífera exponen graves cuestiones éticas. Es aterradora la lista de ‘compadres’ de Pruitt para apoyar a sus amigos multimillonarios de estas industrias a costa de la salud pública y la seguridad de nuestras familias.
Trump eligió mal en nombre de las familias de Nevada y de todo el país nombrando a Pruitt, y ahora lo empeora no despidiéndolo. El aire de Las Vegas está más contaminado que el de muchas ciudades. Necesitamos un administrador de la EPA que arregle el problema. Scott Pruitt ha fracasado en su deber de mantener y aplicar las protecciones ambientales que nos benefician a todos. Ya es hora de que lo boten.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is a Danger to Nevada’s Latinos

I’ve worked as an environmental organizer in the Latino community for years, and I’ve never been more concerned about corporate polluters endangering our community. Nationally, 3 million Latinos have asthma, and nearly half of all Latinos report that someone in their immediate family suffers from asthma. Here in Clark County nearly 30,000 children suffer from asthma attacks, and many of those attacks are triggered by the pollution spewing out of our car tailpipes and fossil fuel power plants each day. The problem is already bad, but now we have an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator who is rolling back the regulations that kept polluters from making our air quality worse, and endangering our health even more.
Scott Pruitt, the Administrator of the EPA, made headlines in recent weeks as his corrupt relationships with the very people he is responsible for regulating are revealed, and this is certainly cause for Trump to fire him. However, Pruitt should have been fired long ago for his failure to protect our environment, and the health of our families, from the corporations that would rather spoil our air and water than spend a dime cleaning up their act.
Here in Nevada, we don’t always recognize how important and valuable the EPA is to our health. Each year, the EPA spends tens of millions of dollars to keep our water safe, to lower rates of pollution, and to clean up environmental damage in and around our neighborhoods. Pruitt and Trump want to slash the EPA’s budget, and earlier this year they even announced the closure of the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) here in Las Vegas where EPA staff focused on keeping us safe from the dangers of toxic chemicals and pollution.
The EPA programs Pruitt is pushing to repeal are popular throughout the country, and particularly among Latinos.
Pruitt is leading efforts to kill the Clean Power Plan, which would have accelerated the transition to clean and renewable energy sources. More than 80 percent of Latino voters support new clean energy investments, and that may be in part because a higher share of Latinos are employed in the wind and solar industries than in the overall U.S. workforce. And here in Nevada, more than 100 solar companies employ nearly 9,000 people.
Pruitt also denies climate change, so it was no surprise when he urged Trump to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, even though 93 percent of Latino voters supported staying in the agreement.
Most recently, Pruitt called for the EPA to rollback fuel efficiency standards on new cars. Since those limits were enacted in 2012, Nevadans have saved $290 million at the gas pump, and that is why nearly 7 in 10 voters nationwide favored maintaining those standards.
Now, Pruitt’s corruption is more obvious as the details about the hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars he wasted on first class air travel unfold. The deals he made with fossil fuel lobbyists and corporations raise serious ethics questions. The list of actions Pruitt took to support his billionaire friends in the fossil fuel industry at the expense of the pubic health and safety of our families is terrifying.
Trump made the wrong choice for families in Nevada and across the country by hiring Pruitt, and now he’s making matters worse by not firing him. Our air in the Las Vegas region is already more polluted than many cities, and we need an EPA Administrator who will clean up the problem, not make it worse. Scott Pruitt is failing in his duty to uphold and enforce the environmental protections that are in place to protect our public health, and it’s time for him to go.
