Washington DC — En un asombroso reporte, The Intercept reveló que el cabildero de la industria carbonera nominado a la subdirección de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA), Andrew Wheeler, recaudó fondos para el presidente y expresidente de la Comisión de Medio Ambiente y Obras Públicas del Senado meses después de saberse que iba a ser nominado para este puesto.
Wheeler es un notorio negacionista del consenso de la ciencia climática y un fanático de la industria carbonera en Washington.
Como respuesta, la directora Legislativa del Sierra Club, Melinda Pierce, emitió la siguiente declaración:
“El pantanal de corrupción en Washington se profundiza aún más de la imaginado. Es obvio que un cabildero de la industria carbonera no debería dirigir una agencia que nos protege contra la contaminación carbonera del aire y el agua. Pero es aún más obvio que no debería recaudar fondos para la misma gente encargada de confirmarlo tras saberse de su nominación.
“Esta asombrosa revelación tiene que investigarse de inmediato, y se tienen que celebrar nuevas audiencias para preguntar a Wheeler por qué estaba tan dispuesto a recaudar fondos para los mismos senadores que votarían sobre su nominación. Su confirmación no debe ocurrir hasta que esto ocurra”.

Sierra Club Calls for Delay of Vote, Investigation, New Hearings
WASHINGTON, DC — In a shocking report this morning, The Intercept reveals that the coal lobbyist nominated to be #2 at EPA, Andrew Wheeler, hosted fundraisers for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee chairman as well as the immediate past chairman months after he was already the presumptive nominee.
Wheeler is best known for being a denier of the scientific consensus on climate change and an coal industry hack in Washington.
In Response, Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce Released the Following Statement:
“Trump’s swamp runs even deeper than anyone imagined. It’s obvious a coal lobbyist shouldn’t run the agency that safeguards against air and water pollution from coal, but it’s even more obvious that he shouldn't host fundraisers for the very people who will vote on him after he was the presumptive nominee.
“This shocking revelation needs to be immediately investigated, and hearings should be held again to ask Wheeler why he was so eager to hold fundraisers for the very people voting on his nomination. No vote should proceed till that happens.”
