Washington, DC — Las autoridades de inmigración están separando a miles de niños de sus familias en Estados Unidos durante sus solicitudes de asilo contra la violencia de la que escapan en sus países. La Oficina de Derechos Humanos de la ONU considera esta práctica una violación de la ley internacional, pero hasta el momento la administración Trump lo está ignorando.
Al mismo tiempo, el procurador general, Jeff Sessions, está imitando las tácticas de Trump usando a familias inmigrantes como moneda de cambio en su intento desesperado de financiar el muro fronterizo. Al mismo tiempo, la mayoría republicana en el Congreso prepara dos propuestas de ley migratoria profundamente defectuosas, ya que ninguna resolvería la crisis de separación de familias.
Como respuesta, el director ejecutivo del Sierra Club, Michael Brune, emitió la siguiente declaración:
“Es imposible justificar un sistema inmigratorio que rompe la unidad familiar y facilita que agentes de nuestro propio gobierno arranquen a niños de los brazos de sus padres. Las personas que llegan a nuestro país en busca de una mejor vida merecen ser tratadas con dignidad y ecuanimidad. Pero esta administración está usando a estas familias como monedas de cambio a favor de una agenda racista.
“Este trato inhumano a los inmigrantes y el desprecio a comunidades fronterizas enteras que ha estado ocurriendo por décadas se han visto agravados exponencialmente gracias a esta administración y a su inaceptable comportamiento. También son inaceptables las soluciones falsas pregonadas por el liderazgo republicano en el Congreso, y rechazamos de plano los intentos de la Casa Blanca y la bancada republicana de enemistar a las comunidades fronterizas contra las familias inmigrantes.
“Los miembros y seguidores del Sierra Club luchan por la igualdad de los entornos humano y natural, así que tenemos que cambiar cualquier situación en las que las familias queden separadas y los niños encerrados por motivos políticos. Por tanto, exigimos que el gobierno trabaje en soluciones reales que traten a todos los seres humanos con respeto acabando con la separación de familias, rechazando la militarización de la frontera y creando una vía hacia la ciudadanía para millones de inmigrantes que consideran este su país”.

Sierra Club Statement on Family Separation and Deeply-Flawed House Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Currently, thousands of children are being separated from their families in the United States as they seek asylum from the violence in their countries. The U.N. Human Rights Office has deemed this practice against international law, but so far the Trump administration is ignoring them.
At the same time, Attorney General Sessions is mimicking Trump’s tactics in using immigrant families as a bargaining chip in a desperate effort to fund a border wall, while House Republicans prepare two deeply-flawed pieces of immigration legislation -- neither of which fix the family separation crisis.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
"It is impossible to justify an immigration system that tears families apart and sees children ripped from their mother’s arms by agents of our own government. People arriving in our country seeking a better life deserve to be treated with dignity and fairness, but this administration is using these families as political bargaining chips to push a racist agenda.
“This inhumane treatment of many immigrants and disregard for entire communities in the borderlands and elsewhere that has been happening for decades has been made exponentially worse by this administration, and practices like this by the Trump Administration are not acceptable. The false solutions pedaled by House Republican leadership are also unacceptable, and we reject every attempt by this administration and House Republicans to pit borderlands communities against immigrant families.
“The members and the supporters of the Sierra Club fight for the quality of the natural and the human environment, so any situation in which families are being torn apart and children are being locked away for political reasons is one we must join in the struggle to change. That’s why we are demanding our government get to work on real solutions that treat every human being with respect by ending family separation, rejecting the militarization of the borderlands, and creating a pathway to citizenship for the millions of immigrants who call our country home.”
