'To Our Health!' Cheers to the EPA!
Alexandria, VA
On Thursday, March 10th, Councilwoman Del Pepper joined dozens of Alexandrians and Arlingtonians in a packed upstairs room of the GreenDragon Pub to toast the EPA ‘to our health.’ The group raised a glass to EPA for their safeguards that prevent us from getting sick from toxic pollution from coal and dirty energy. Rally for Protection from Toxic Coal Ash

Dozens gathered in front of EPA on November 17th to call for a strong rule on coal ash as the public comment period drew to a close. Moms, dads and kids joined in the fun, to make sure EPA heard the message loud and clear: "Weak rules on coal ash have to go!" Watch the video here.
EPA Coal Ash Hearing
Arlington, VA
On August 30th, over 125 people came to the EPA hearing to urge that the subtitle C rule - including federally enforceable regulation of coal ash - be adopted. This was the first of seven hearings held throughout the country. Residents from communities contaminated by coal ash, and supportive activists from across the region voiced concerns regarding the health and environmental hazards of toxic coal ash. Some of the most moving testimony came from residents of our own Chesapeake, VA, where 400 people have suffered severe health affects and financial losses from water contamination caused by 1.5 million tons of coal ash used at the Battlefield Golf Course.
Army Corps of Engineers Hearing on NWP 21

Nearly 100 people came to speak against the use of the Nationwide Permit 21 at the Army Corps hearing in Big Stone Gap, VA on October 15th, 2009. Thanks to all who came to stand in solidarity with Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards (SAMS) and the brave citizens of Appalachia in the face of the coal companies and voice your opposition to mountaintop removal coal mining! From the Mine to Mirant, Coal is Dirty Business News Conference
Alexandria, VA
On September 29th, 2009, over 35 people gathered in Market Square, next to City Hall in Old Town Alexandria to stop the mountaintop removal that is devastating our Appalachian Mountains. Attendees signed postcard petitions calling for a freeze on new mountaintop removal mining permits, and contributed photo petitions to send to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in support of clean energy.
