Beyond Coal North Dakota

A proposed coal drying plant, coal mine, and coal gasification plant would change the small town of South Heart forever. Farmers and ranchers in the area have banded together to fight for their family's health, their homes, and their way of life. With the promise of jobs, GTL Energy of Australia and Great Northern Power Development (GNPD) of Houston, Texas have convinced the local county commission to rezone the coal plant site from agriculture to industrial, thus paving the way to the industrialization of another piece of rural North Dakota. But, the landowners recently won an appeal of that decision in court and are continuing to work with Dacotah Chapter and other environmental groups to educate North Dakotans about the adverse impacts to the environment and the social structure of the community that this proposed coal project brings with it.
