Coastal Commission to Report on Investigation into Offshore Fracking
By Michael Thornton
After learning that hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking", has been secretly occurring along California's coastline for years, the California Coastal Commission will announce the results of its investigation into the controversial and dangerous practice at its meeting on February 12, 2014 in Pismo Beach.
Investigations by the Environmental Defense Center (EDC) and the Associated Press (AP) have found over 200 instances of fracking operations in state and federal waters off California, all unbeknownst to the state agency charged with protecting California's precious coastal environment and communities.
Now comes your opportunity to tell the California Coastal Commission that you want it to use the full weight of its authority to protect our irreplaceable coastal waters from being run amok with oil and gas fracking.
Join Sierra Club members, neighbors and our allies for this first and crucial California Coastal Commission meeting on offshore fracking.
When: Wednesday February 12, 2014 (9:00 A.M.)
Where: The Cliffs Resort Hotel
2757 Shell Beach Road
Pismo Beach, CA 93449

Volunteer for a Week in Yosemite
Each year, LeConte Memorial Lodge seeks to bring new volunteers to Yosemite National Park for one week to serve as docents at the Lodge. While there are many returning volunteers, the addition of Sierra Club members who have not previously volunteered brings new ideas and perspectives to the visitor experience.
LeConte Memorial Lodge welcomes nearly 13,000 visitors from May until the end of September--approximately 4,000 of these visitors are children. Volunteers greet the public, talk about the Sierra Club, the importance of LeConte Memorial Lodge and Dr. Joseph LeConte, and provide basic information about Yosemite.
Each volunteer spends one week, Saturday through the following Saturday, with the total number of volunteer hours about 25. Monday and Tuesday are free days—when the LeConte Memorial Lodge is closed.
A brief application and background check are required. Please contact Dr. Bonnie Gisel, Curator, at 209 403-6676 orBonnie.Gisel@sierraclub.org.
If you communicate with your legislators this month, here are a couple of things you might want to pass along:
--Support budget proposals and policies that encourage smarter groundwater monitoring and management and better water conservation.
--California needs a moratorium on fracking and well stimulation—they're dangerous for public health and they waste precious water.
