Protect the Pines

Great Coastal Places activists, December, 2005.

Dear Friend of the Coast,

On December 15th, I was joined by Great Coastal Places activists from Monterey, San Francisco, Marin, San Clemente, Long Beach, and San Luis Obispo to make our holiday presentation to the California Coastal Commission (pictured at left).

We hand-delivered more than 1,200 hand-written notes in the shape of holiday ornaments – all hung on potted Monterey pine trees – to thank the Commission and urge them to protect the largest natural stand of threatened Monterey pines left in the world. The Pebble Beach Company, a golf course developer, has proposed to cut down 17,000 trees in the Del Monte Forest for a 21st golf course in Monterey County.
