SIERRA CLUB LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO CLEAN UP DYNEGY
“Dynegy is now the largest developer of new coal-fired power plants in the country,” said Bruce Nilles, director of the Sierra Club’s National Coal Campaign. “We need to work together as Americans to stop Dynegy’s dirty coal plant plans and shift those investments into cleaner alternatives like wind, solar, and efficiency that can create new jobs and economic opportunity while cutting pollution, improving public health, and helping solve global warming.”

While other power companies increasingly are shunning carbon-based pollution because of its widely recognized financial and regulatory risks, Dynegy is moving in exactly the opposite direction on coal -- threatening the climate, the pocketbooks of ratepayers, the health of those living near the power plants, and the long-term wealth of its investors. Of 157 new coal-fired power plants originally announced for the
“Wall Street’s leading banks already understand that backing coal is becoming an increasingly expensive and risky proposition,” said Rebecca Tarbotton, director of Rainforest Action Network’s Global Finance Campaign. “Companies around the world are realizing that going green can be a boon both to the environment as well as their own bottom line. “Many companies, states and cities across the country are already moving beyond coal to cleaner energy. Just last year increased wind development added $9 billion to our economy. Dynegy has an opportunity to really be a leader in the new energy economy,” said Alex Levinson, director of the Sierra Club’s Clean Energy Solutions Campaign.
The six plants targeted in the Clean Up Dynegy grassroots campaign are as follows: Arkansas - Plum Point (#2) - Osceola, AR; Georgia - Longleaf - Early County, GA.; Iowa - Elk Run - Waterloo, IA.; Michigan - Mid-Michigan - Midland, MI.; Nevada - White Pine - White Pine County, NV.; and Texas - Sandy Creek - Riesel, TX.
