Sierra Club Calls for End of Lockout at Consolidated Edison in New York
New York, NY – The Sierra Club today called for an end to the lockout of 8,500 members of the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) at Consolidated Edison Company of New York. The lockout began on July 1, when Con Edison refused an offer by 8,500 members of UWUA Local 1-2 to continue work while negotiating a new contract.
The following is a statement from Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune:
“We support the workers of UWUA Local 1-2, who have been unfairly locked out of their jobs. These skilled workers keep New York safe, and locking out hard-working union members is bad news for public safety and the environment.
“The Sierra Club strongly supports the rights of working people to have good, safe jobs with fair wages and benefits, which is essential to protecting our communities and our environment.
“For the sake of our economy and the well-being of New York families, Con Edison should end this lockout, return to the bargaining table and get these workers a fair contract, so that they can get back to the job of providing energy as safely and efficiently as possible to New York businesses and families.”
