Sierra Club Praises Proposal for NOAA Climate Service
Washington, D.C.--The Department of Commerce today announced plans to establish a new Climate Service line office within the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in order to provide the public, businesses, and other government entities with better access to NOAA's vast store of information and scientific research on climate change. NOAA also today launched a new web portal, www.climate.gov. The Sierra Club offered the following comments in response.
Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director
"The Obama administration has returned science to its proper role in the decisionmaking process and this new Climate Service should prove to be a valuable resource as the administration continues to move forward on so many fronts involving climate change.
"Many agencies across the federal government are already doing great work and consolidating efforts will only improve access to this important information.
"As polluters and their allies continue to try and muddy the waters around climate science, the Climate Service will provide easy, direct access to the valuable scientific research undertaken by government scientists and others.
