The Federal Inflation Reduction Act aims to make electric living affordable. Sophie Mullinax of Electrify Asheville-Buncombe will introduce ways we can all benefit at the WNC Sierra Club's April program, to be held at 7 p.m. on April 3 at the OLLI/Reuter Center.
Beyond federal goals, the City of Asheville and Buncombe County’s ambitious clean-energy goals have resulted in a community-wide objective of achieving complete clean-energy reliance by 2042. Electrification of our buildings is a crucial strategy to get Buncombe County to 100% renewable energy by 2042.
At home, some residents are buying solar panels and others electric cars. Now residents with less cash can contribute to the goals, while saving on the initial and operating costs, because of the Biden Administration’s IRA, Electrify Asheville and others.
"Our goal is to connect consumers and community members with information about electrification, electric machines, available incentives, and vetted local contractors who can install them," Mullinax says. "There will be opportunities to group-buy to achieve discounted pricing."

About the presenter
Sophie Mullinax works with communities around the US on launching community-based, clean-energy programs to support the adoption of renewable energy and electrification. She managed the Blue Horizons Project, a local clean-energy project that promotes the adoption of solar energy and energy-efficient practices in Asheville and Buncombe County. She oversaw Solarize Asheville-Buncombe, which generated 1.4 MW of new solar capacity and 182 installations. It also resulted in a donated solar-energy system to a local nonprofit, Beloved Asheville, and 11 free and reduced-cost installations for low- and moderate-income residents.
About Electrify Asheville-Buncombe
Electrify Asheville-Buncombe is an electrification pilot program focused on increasing the adoption of heat pumps for space and water heating in Buncombe County. Community members will be able to learn about electrification, heat pumps, and other technologies and be connected to vetted local contractors for installation and service.
